How to Replace Replacement Glass in Windows
Whether your windows are broken or damaged, or are just a bit outdated, replacement glass gives you the chance to customize the look and feel of your home. This is also an excellent opportunity to upgrade to safer glass that is tempered.
It is essential to measure the frame of your window before you buy replacement glass. Take measurements of the frame at a variety of points, then round to the closest 1/8-inch.
Size

Then, using a tape measure and two measurements, you can take the top and the bottom of the window. Avoid measuring the sill, or any other component as this could hinder your measurements. Do not take measurements in the middle of a frame as this can result in an incorrect and incomplete measurement.
To get the glass size subtract 1/8 inch from the width and height measurements. This will make installation simpler and allows for seasonal expansion and contracting. Once you have your window glass measurements you can take them to a hardware store or a home center to get them cut for you. The removal of an old pane of glass from the window frame starts by applying a grid of duct tape to the entire glass, making sure that it remains in place during the removal process. Once the tape is in place it is important to wear thick gloves and eye protection to stop the accidental breaking of shards which could fall off or fly away during the removal process.
The next step is to prepare the window’s frame to accommodate a new pane. Using a putty knife, pliers or a razor scraper carefully scrape away any glazing points that secure the pane in the window frame’s recess. Then, carefully remove and take away the old glass in a safe manner. When you’re done, clean the frame of the window and apply linseed to any wood that is bare to make it last longer.
When you are ready to put in your new pane make sure it is snugly inserted into the frame. Find the width and height of the original window opening. Subtract 1/8 inch from each measurement. To ensure that the new pane will fit properly, take off any old glazing putty by using a wirebrush and vacuum or dust the inside of the frame rabbet.
After the rabbet has been cleaned, roll a thin piece of new glazing compound into it and press it into the corner. This will create an elongated bed on which the window can rest. Install the new window, and then press it into the frame. Use the tip of the putty knife before installing the new glazing points to mark the center of every corner of the frame.
