Bernard Dumondel was the product leader of Laguna II at the time. He used the hotel room key to unlock the car. As the key featured tiny magnetic strips, he thought that it would be possible to make a car key that functioned similarly.
In the years following the card was hailed as an innovative invention, and it is now available on two out of every three Renault vehicles. While smartphones may be in the process of replacing it, Renault has chosen to utilize these new technologies without letting the hands-free card slip by the wayside.
The keyless entry system
Renault’s hands-free card was a groundbreaking piece of technology when it was first introduced 20 years ago. The exterior is the same, but the technology has been improved to make it easier to use and less vulnerable to hacking.
In the first place, it cannot be used to open the doors or start the engine from outside the vehicle, unless it is activated by the driver. This is because radio antennae “around the car” are set up to determine whether the key is inside or outside. The key will still work at a distance to begin the ignition of your car, but it won’t be able to unlock the doors, which is to ensure your safety.
The second is that the system’s wireless remote control transmissions use a rolling code. This minimizes the possibility of security being compromised by someone intercepting and retransmitting the control message in order to gain access, but it does not eliminate the threat completely. [1]
