Renault Keys – How They Work
Renaults have a complex system in the sense that keys and immobilisers go. This could make the process of replacing keys very slow. It can take a long time to program the car, unless you have access to it and can bring it to us.
Keys
The Renault group is perhaps best known as a manufacturer of vans, buses, tractors and Lorries although they also manufacture cars. It is a well-established business that was established in 1899. They have a wide selection of cars. You’ll require a replacement key in the event that you lose or damage your keys to your car. Rather than waiting for your local dealer to order a new key for you and wait for a longer time to receive it delivered, why not let us take care of it? At KeyNOW we can replace your remote or smart key for you quickly.
We can provide the mechanical code needed to purchase an Renault Clio V spare key, Captur 2 spare key or New Zoe key from the dealer. We can also reset keys such as a Renault Kangoo, Traffic or Master key.
Renault has a rich history of innovation. It was the first company to have utilized remote central locking on a production car. This technology was invented by Paul Lipschultz for his employer Niemens, a supplier of security components to the automotive industry. This invention was a major leap in the direction of safety for cars.
Remotes
Despite smartphones seeming to be on the verge of replacing them, Renault’s hands-free card continue to be used widely in their vehicles. They’re actually included in two out of three vehicles Renault sells and their usage rate has been rising in recent years. In this video Pascaline from Renault’s Products Division explains the way these cards work.
Renaults have an immobiliser mechanism which is quite complicated. It is important to understand the basics before attempting to unlock a vehicle without the use of a key. Certain cars come with an emergency lock fitted to the door handle of the passenger and is a good option if keys stop working or the batteries run out. This is an excellent option for those who don’t wish to pay for a locksmith.
You’ll require a tool such as an a-slim jim or pump-up if you want to remove the key fob. If you don’t have these tools, you might need to use the screwdriver and hammer to take off the cylinder.
You should be able to the passenger side and you will see an unassuming lock that is inserted into the driver’s side panel close to the handle of the door. This is a security feature to ensure that people don’t lock themselves inside their vehicle or accidentally stealing a neighbour’s. It’s a straightforward, yet effective security measure that will save you a lot of time and stress when you have to gain access to your vehicle quickly.
Transponders
A lot of modern cars have transponders to guard against theft of vehicles. These tiny devices are attached to the key fob and include an electronic chip that communicates with the car whenever it is within of. The chips utilize a unique code to identify the key and tell it which vehicle it is paired with.
The chip emits an electrical signal that is detected by two coils that are placed around the barrels of ignition inside the vehicle. These coils are activated when the key is within reach and send a signal of electromagnetic energy to the transponder chip. The chip responds by sending a unique identifier to the car. The unique code can be used to unlock doors and begin the car.
renault zoe key was used in military planes during the World War 2 era to help air traffic controllers identify them on radar. This type of chip code is still in use in the aviation industry.
These systems were believed to be clone proof up until recently. This was due to the fact that there were only 74 Quadrillion (74,000,000,000,000,000) possible codes for each transponder. The technology behind these chips has been improved and they no longer have replicable. This has led a number of auto locksmiths to upskill their skills by learning to read and write the modern chips.
Immobilisers
The Renault isn’t the most straightforward when it comes to the key systems and immobilisers. There are two major systems that influence the way the new key is programmed into the car. The older one uses a “kill switch” to disable a vital part of the car’s starting mechanism if the proper key is not present. These are very delicate and will need a trained technician to correctly determine and correct the issue if they fail.
The newer system is easier to use. It employs advanced encryption and rolling security codes to avoid copying the code from the ECU or key. This is the code that will be used to replace keys we supply.
Certain models may even have an exclusive ring antenna that can’t be recognized by standard transponder scanners and is unique to the vehicle. This is extremely effective in blocking hotwiring, and is extremely difficult to bypass using a standard keys or a transponder emulator. We have a special product dubbed the Renault Antenna Emulator (RAE) that can be used to disable this type of immobiliser found in Renault Clio phase 2 models, as well as in some Renault commercial vehicles that are equipped with ID46 transponders. It mimics the operation of a transponder that is valid in the ring antenna. It can be used on failed keys or lost keys without removing the ECU. It has been tested by Thatcham and endorsed to provide further security for customers of motor insurance.
